SYNOPSIS | Negra, Yo Soy Bella is a portrait of Mar Cruz– an Afro-Puerto Rican woman who sources strength, healing and black pride through the tradition of Bomba. Black women in Puerto Rico are leading the Afro-latinidad movement and shifting societal beauty standards. Mar Cruz, a Afro-Puerto Rican woman, uses Bomba, a rhythm and dance form created by Africans in the 1600s, to connect with her roots and transform and heal. The title "Negra, Yo Soy Bella" (Black, I am Beautiful), showcases the powerful message of visibility and recognition of the African heritage in Puerto Rico, a country with a history of denying and ignoring this aspect of its culture. The chorus of women singing this song advocates for visibility and raises awareness of the Blackness of Puerto Rico.
